For decades, US and Canadian citizens have benefited from visa-free travel to much of Europe, where some of the most popular destinations for international business travel and vacation are located. However, this longstanding travel policy will change in the final months of 2026.
The European Union’s European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will introduce a new step for Canadian and US travelers visiting participating countries. As part of the updated European entry requirements, ETIAS will become an important consideration for US citizens planning to travel to Europe. While ETIAS will not dramatically change how Americans visit the continent, it is a key update that travelers will need to prepare for once the system is fully implemented.
What is ETIAS?
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System is an upcoming travel authorization requirement for those coming from visa-exempt countries visiting participating European countries.
Unlike a traditional visa, these entry requirements are an electronic authorization connected to your passport. Once approved, it will generally remain valid for up to three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Travelers who receive a new passport will need to apply for a new ETIAS authorization before their next trip.
A valid ETIAS authorization allows eligible travelers to visit participating European countries for short stays, including multiple trips during the authorization period: up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, just because someone obtains ETIAS does not mean they are guaranteed entry. Travelers must still meet all other entry requirements upon arrival in Europe, including presenting a valid passport and any required travel documents at border control.
ETIAS is required for the following 30 countries:
Austria
Belgium
Bulgaria
Croatia
Cyprus
Czechia
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hungary
Iceland
Italy
Latvia
Liechtenstein
Lithuania
Luxembourg
Malta
Netherlands
Norway
Poland
Portugal
Romania
Slovakia
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
How to Obtain ETIAS Authorization for US Citizens
Since ETIAS has not officially launched yet, travelers don’t need to take any action yet. The EU is expected to announce the program’s official start day in the months leading up to its rollout, which is expected sometime in the final quarter of 2026. Once the system is in place, those who need ETIAS must complete an online application before departing for Europe.
Applying for ETIAS
When the application becomes available, travelers will complete the ETIAS application online using the passport they plan to use for their trip. Applicants should confirm that their passport meets the program’s requirements, including having at least three months of remaining validity after their planned departure.
Information for ETIAS Authorization
The ETIAS application will require travelers to provide information that helps verify their identity, travel plans, and eligibility. This includes personal details such as their:
- Full name
- Date and place of birth
- Nationality
- Home address
- Email address
- Phone number
- Parents’ first names
Applicants will also need to provide passport information, details about their education level and current occupation, and information about their planned travel to participating European countries. The application will also include questions related to security and eligibility, including certain criminal convictions, previous travel to conflict zones, and prior decisions requiring them to leave another country.
Travelers may also have another person complete the application on their behalf, such as a corporate travel manager or a travel advisor. If a representative submits the application, they will need to provide their own identifying details, contact information, relationship to the traveler, and confirmation that they are authorized to complete the application.
Application Fees and Processing Times
The ETIAS application for US citizens will require a €20 fee for most travelers. Those under 18 and over 70 are exempt from this payment, as are certain qualifying family members of European Union citizens.
Many applications are expected to receive approval on the same day they are submitted. However, travelers should still complete the application before their departure date to allow time for any additional review if needed.
