On many flights, especially domestic routes, business and first class are not very different from economy seating. You’ll find extra room, more entertainment options and better service. A true first class experience is generally reserved for long-haul transcontinental routes.

Enjoying the premium experience of first class, which varies between routes and airlines, comes with the responsibility of additional etiquette.

Respect Airline Staff

Flying in first class, no matter how you acquired your ticket, does not give you the privilege of disrespecting the airline’s staff. Being kind and courteous to everyone you encounter will make you experience even more enjoyable.

Respect Fellow Travelers

Travelers often splurge for a seat in business or first class to take advantage of a quiet atmosphere more conducive to sleeping than economy. As much as possible, follow the lead of your fellow passengers. Keep noise and light to a minimum throughout your flight.

This can be difficult while you’re taking in all the luxuries of first class for the first time. Be sure to enjoy the upgraded experience, but don’t interrupt other passengers’ trips to do so.

Dress Appropriately

This etiquette tip is no long as important as it once was. You certainly don’t need to be dressed to the nines. However, you’ll have plenty of room and time to change into comfortable clothes on the plane. Arrive looking put together for your time in the airline’s lounge and boarding. You may just impress staff and passengers, which can lead to an even better experience.

Take Advantage of the Perks

The amenities of first class go beyond the flight itself. Use other perks the airline offers with your ticket, including hotel pickup, airport lounges and priority at security checkpoints. You’ll arrive at your destination more relaxed!
