While weekend trips are always welcome during the winter, it’s not always possible to get away for an overnight excursion. These winter day trip ideas are perfect for Western New Yorkers who only have a day to enjoy a destination. To make this list, a destination had to be within a 2-hour drive of Buffalo, offer plenty of indoor activities and be home to a variety of eateries.

Chautauqua, New York

Distance from Buffalo: 1.5 Hour Drive
You may think of Chautauqua as a summertime haven, but there is plenty to do in colder weather as well. The Chautauqua Institution offers programming year-round, including the beautiful Winter Village at Chautauqua each holiday season. You can eat on campus at the Institute or stop in Fredonia or Jamestown for more culinary options. Complete your day trip with window shopping and antiquing or a drink at one of the many breweries, wineries or distilleries surrounding Chautauqua.

East Aurora, New York

Distance from Buffalo: .5 Hour Drive
Like Chautauqua, East Aurora is a cultural hotspot. Here, you’ll find the Roycroft Campus and complementary Elbert Hubbard Roycroft Museum. There’s more history in East Aurora than you can take in in just a day; the town is also home to the Millard Fillmore and Aurora History Museums. Don’t miss the opportunity to eat at one of East Aurora’s many acclaimed restaurants. For family trips, Vidler’s 5 & 10 Store is also a must-do.

Geneva, New York

Distance from Buffalo: 2 Hour Drive
Nestled on the northern shore of Seneca Lake is historic Geneva, perfect for a winter day trip from Buffalo. While this town is brimming with lake goers in the summer months, winter is much quieter. You’ll still be able to enjoy the area’s well-known wineries and breweries, albeit with shorter hours. Wander through the Geneva History Museum in the afternoon and take in a show at Smith Center for the Arts before heading back to Buffalo. For dinner, treat yourself to a meal overlooking the lake at one of the city’s fine dining options.

Pittsford, New York

Distance from Buffalo: 2 Hour Drive
Just past Rochester is the suburb of Pittsford. This small town is worth a day trip from Buffalo, with plenty of boutiques and coffee shops to pop into. The upscale main street is also home to spas, salons and yoga studios for a relaxing day away. End your day with dinner and a drink from one of the nearby breweries.

St. Catharines, Ontario

Distance from Buffalo: 1 Hour Drive
St. Catharines sits along the southwestern shore of Lake Ontario just an hour from Buffalo. Downtown is home to dozens of restaurants serving photo-worthy meals and snacks. Year-round, local farmers set up at Market Square to sell their wares on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Families will love the small, interactive St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre, which also includes the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Museum.
